House Minority Leader John Boehner, working quickly in an attempt to fend off any potential challenge from his Republican colleagues, is preparing to make plans public on his campaign for re-election as head of the House Republicans, a source close to Boehner said Tuesday evening.
“An announcement could come as soon as tomorrow,” said the source.
House Republicans are bracing for possible losses of 20 or more seats tonight, and GOP aides expect a shakeup in the in the leadership ladder in the hours following the election. The Republican Conference is scheduled to meet on Nov. 19 and 20 to hash out the leadership situation.
While none of Boehner’s colleagues have announced plans to challenge him, party insiders believe Chief Deputy Minority Whip Eric Cantor could take a shot.
“They are laying down the gauntlet early,” one former House leadership aide remarked of Boehner’s move to announce plans to run for his seat.
