House Minority John Boehner might be dodging an early bullet in his effort to remain GOP leader.
Deputy Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), widely seen as a leading potential challenger to Boehner, is instead making calls to Republican colleagues in an effort to line up support for the Minority Whip leadership position, several GOP sources tell Politicker.com today.
“He’s looking for commitments,” said an aide to one GOP member who had received a call from Cantor in recent hours. “He’s into the darned race.”
The Minority Whip position is currently held by U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.). Spokesperson to Blunt and Cantor did not return telephone calls seeking comment.
Politicker.com was the first to report on Tuesday evening that Boehner was preparing to launch his bid for re-election. On Wednesday morning, after watching his party lose a handful of House seats, Boehner fired off a letter to Republican members seeking their support.
“It’s time for the losing to stop. And my commitment to you is that it will,” Boehner wrote.
Boehner must be kidding!
His comment that he promises the losing will stop. He of all people can't make that promise, since he lacks the strategy mind set to actually do the job Republican Leader.
The conference better hope to God that Cantor gets to run the show from the Whip seat.
Where in the world is Pence????
