The Canton Repository is reporting that state Sen. Kirk Schuring has conceded the race for Ohio's 16th Congressional District to opponent state Sen. John Boccieri (D-Alliance).
The two were vying to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre), and the victory will make Boccieri the first Democrat to represent Ohio's 16th in 58 years. Regula has held the seat since 1973.
Schuring had offered his congratulations to Boccieri.
"I pledged to work with him. To try to help him with his agenda," Schuring told the Repository.
The Repository reported that Boccieri won 57 percent of the Stark County ballots counted, with 41,098 votes to Schuring's 30,964.
The Repository also reported that in Medina County, unofficial results had Boccieri winning with 55.8 percent, or 30,287 votes to Schuring's 24,012.
"Wayne county was a dead heat, with unofficial results giving Boccieri 24,431 votes to Schuring's 24,304," the Repository wrote. "In Ashland County, Schuring won 9,037 to 8,701."
