Cuyahoga prosecutor makes U.S. attorney endorsement

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason (D) has endorsed his assistant to be the next U.S. attorney for the northern district of Ohio.

Spokesperson Ryan Miday said Mason endorsed Steven Dever, who has been assistant county prosecutor for 24 years. Dever, 50, is currently the chief trial counsel for the prosecutor’s office.

Barack Obama will appoint new U.S. attorneys after he is inaugurated to replace appointees of President Bush. The nominees must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, which puts U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain) in a key position to make decisions on who should be the federal government’s chief prosecutors in Ohio.

Dever’s name is one among many being circulated for positions in both districts. The list includes but is not limited to Gov. Ted Strickland’s chief legal counsel Kent Markus, former attorney general candidate and Obama convention delegate Subodh Chandra, as well as former federal prosecutors Steve Dettelbach and James Wooley.

Attorney General Nancy Rogers would be eligible for nomination after she finishes Marc Dann’s term and leaves in January.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this articlesaid Dettelbach and Wooley were former assistant U.S. attorneys. Both were former federal prosecutors.
