The internal fight for the direction of the Ohio Republican Party got uglier as chairman Bob Bennett blasted the leading critic of Deputy Chairman Kevin DeWine in an email to party leaders across the state.
Bennett told members of the state central committee and county party chairmen in an email Monday that Lori Viars is engaging in “divisive and destructive behavior” after she has emailed supporters and asked them to share their opinion of DeWine with county party leaders and committee members.
Viars is the executive director of Ohio's Family First political action committee. She and other conservative activists, have criticized DeWine for saying Republicans need to exchange a socially-conservative message for a fiscally-conservative message in a press conference following the election.
“Unfortunately, these comments were presented in news reports without context, and the ringleader of one particular group saw an opportunity to drive a wedge,” Bennett wrote of Viars indirectly. “I should add that this person never bothered to contact Kevin, myself, or any member of the staff before firing off her email campaign.”
Viars said she’s disappointed that Bennett would target her and by extension the party’s grassroots.
“I think it’s sad that when the grassroots base of our party have an opinion on whether or not we should stand by the issues in our platform, we’re called divisive and destructive,” she said.
Bennett said DeWine’s comments are being “greatly twisted out of context by people looking to generate a phony controversy” and that he said nothing more than the party needs to restore its credibility on fiscal issues.
Finally, Bennett personally vouched for DeWine’s ascension to chairman.
“He has spent countless hours and driven thousands of miles getting to know our grassroots leaders, contributors, and volunteers,” he wrote. “I can say first-hand that leading a major battleground state political party is never easy, but Kevin has the skills and the temperament to be an outstanding chair. More importantly, he has the overwhelming confidence and support of our party leadership – especially after these misguided attacks.”
Viars said DeWine has not led the party to endorse conservative candidates in Republican primaries over more liberal or moderate candidates, after being asked by conservative activists to do so.
“He would say all the right things then completely dismiss us, and not do anything we asked or talked about,” she said. “We had concerns about him previously but this kind of upped it a notch.”
Despite her sending emails urging central committee members to tell the party what they think of DeWine in light of his controversial comments, Viars said there’s no active movement to unseat him.
“Our goal is not to find somebody to challenge Kevin. Our goal is to keep our party standing up for the issues that made us strong in the years that made us strong,” she said.
The co-founder of the Coalition Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes asked central committee members in an email sent last Friday to vote against DeWine for chairman.
No one has publically come forth to challenge DeWine in the chairmanship election next month.

Typical Inside the 270 Beltway Reaction
Bennett and his libertarian buddies think all of us social conservatives are nuts. Talk about a group that can not see the bigger picture.
This is why the GOP is lost. Principles matter in the long-run. Keep putting in people with little morals and ethics to see how bad things could continue to get. I for one am registering as an independent (and I ripe up the donation requests; never again will I give to such a corrupt group).
Look at DeWine's voting
Look at DeWine's voting record...He voted against repeal of prevailing wage in Ohio. He is not a social conservative OR an economic conservative....he is Husted's lapdog!!! Get someone new in there!!
DeWine
DeWine is a typical political hack, except that not only does he not have any core values, he's a serial loser. Look at the pathetic operation he oversaw this year. People who signed up to be precinct captains were never contacted. GOP county offices weren't even provided with a pizza budget for those making phone calls.
OhioGOP = disorganized, pathetic, hack-filled joke.
DeWine and leadership
Last Friday I sent Mr. DeWine a very professional, polite email asking him some challenging questions. I am a Life Member of the RNC. I have yet to receive a reply from Mr. DeWine. If Mr. DeWine cannot answer questions from people within the Ohio GOP and has to resort to name calling and labeling instead, to me that shows a clear lack of leadership skills. Then he resorts to the "taken out of context" idea. Please go to Joe Hallett's blog on the Columbus Dispatch where you can hear the entire recording of what Mr. DeWine said. Judge for yourself if what he said was taken out of context.
Ronald Reagan said in his Feb. 1977 speech at CPAC that he envisioned a melding together of the two branches of American conservatism (social and economic) that would create a lasting majority. He knew that would mean compromise, but not a compromise of basic principles.
Mr. DeWine's voting record in the Ohio House begs the question to be asked: is he an economic conservative? It would not seem so.
It would also seem that Mr. Bennett and Mr. DeWine are the ones trying to drive a wedge in their criticism and what appears to be a decision to abandon the social conservatives. It appears they did not learn from history. In the 1960s and early 1970s the Democratic Party turned its back on the majority of social conservatives. The GOP welcomed them with open arms. Fast forward to 2008 and it appears the Ohio GOP is, in the eyes of social conservative leaders, about to make the same mistake as the Democrats of the 1960s.
We, the Ohio GOP are losing elections in Ohio because of leadership failures. Accountability in any organization lies at the top. When the top of the organization makes excuses and blames people its a problem. Abraham Lincoln did not win the Civil War by promoting generals who lost battle after battle. He promoted U.S. Grant for winning battles.
For those who say Mr. DeWine is too good at fund raising, I'll just ask the people who donated money 1) how happy they are with their return on investment with two election cylces of failures and 2) if the Ohio GOP had different leadership and was winning elections, would you not continue to donate and maybe even more?
Ronald Reagan said it best when he said “A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency or simply to swell its numbers. If we want to attract more people to the party, we don't do so by simply making room for them, we need to give them a say in what goes on in the party."
2010 is too important.
