MINNEAPOLIS -- Sunday night the Ohio Republican Party raised $20,000 in donations and corporate contributions for the American Red Cross for relief efforts for those who'll be effected by Hurricane Gustav.
Aboard a river cruise sponsored by U.S. Sen. George Voinovich (R-Cleveland), Republicans solicited donationas for those in the Gulf States and asked them to pray.
"Let's have some fun this week although we know the shadow of Gustav is on this convention, and we should pray to the Holy Spirit that things don't work out as they predict," Voinovich said.
Former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine (R-Springfield) also struck a somber tone during a generally celebratory mood aboard the boat.
"As we prepare for this great convention, other Americans are trying to prepare for what could be disaster for them and their families," DeWine said, adding that his wife Fran suggested the party raise money for hurricane relief.
The DeWines began by donating a $1,000 check to begin efforts. DeWine said the Ohio Delegation's corporate sponsors matched the party's $10,000 in collections dollar-for-dollar totalling about $20,000.
UPDATE: John McCain's regional campaign manager Jon Seaton announced Monday morning that Victory campaign offices across Ohio will collect canned goods for hurricane relief.
Seaton said the idea came directly from Ohio Republicans, especially Mrs. DeWine.
