Former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman said he could run for governor in 2010 or 2014 and for U.S. Senate if Sen. George Voinovich (R-Cleveland) retires or against Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain) in 2012. Portman said he liked being an executive and legislator while in Washington.
"I loved being a manager on the executive side, in the cabinet positions. It's neat because you can make things happen more quickly and really effect peoples' lives very directly," Portman said. "I also enjoyed the legislative responsibility because I've found that I could work with Democrats and Republicans to get things done."
Portman said this year he's committed to helping McCain win Ohio and the Republican Party replenish itself.
Portman said he would make a decision about a 2010 bid after the election, but is not looking to decide any sooner, having returned to Ohio less than a year ago from Washington.
