 <title>Brown and Voinovich express disappointment in failure of Senate to pass auto aid legislation</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/daviddewitt/brown-and-voinovich-express-disappointment-failure-senate-pass-auto-aid-legislation</link>
 <description>U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain) and George Voinovich (R-Cleveland) expressed disappointment late Thursday following the failure to break the Republican filibuster of legislation to provide bridge loans to the U.S. auto industry.
&amp;quot;It&amp;#39;s unfathomable to me that Senate Republicans would turn their backs on millions of American families,&amp;quot; Brown said. &amp;quot;During the recent campaign we heard a lot from Republicans about the people that make up the real America and even the Carhartts they wear. I guess that was then.&amp;quot;
Voinovich said that Congress had failed to do its job and provide bridge loans to the industry.
&amp;quot;There are millions of hard-working Americans tonight who are worried about their jobs and providing for their families,&amp;quot; Voinovich said. &amp;quot;And tonight, Congress failed them.&amp;quot;

 <title>Latta and Schmidt explain reasons for voting against auto bailout</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/daviddewitt/latta-and-schmidt-explain-reasons-voting-against-auto-bailout</link>
 <description>U.S. Reps. Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland) and Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) gave their reasons for voting against legislation passed in the U.S. House Wednesday that seeks to give $14 billion in bridge loans to companies of the American auto industry.
 &amp;quot;The auto industry is a critical segment of our nation&amp;#39;s economy, especially in Ohio,&amp;quot; Latta said. &amp;quot;During the testimony from the ‘Detroit 3&amp;#39; and the drafting of this legislation, important questions remain unanswered that put the American taxpayer at serious risk.&amp;quot;
Latta said Congress was putting one person in charge of an entire area of the economy and that he could not in good faith give one person management power over the car companies.

 <title>Poll: Economy trumps education as gov&#039;t priority</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/justinmiller/poll-economy-trumps-education-govt-priority</link>

Seventy-seven percent of voters say the economy is the state’s biggest problem according to a survey from Quinnipiac University’s Polling Institute released Thursday. Only five percent of respondents said education was the most important issue facing the state.

 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/justinmiller/voters-budget-fix-cut-spending-dont-raise-taxes</link>

The state&amp;#39;s budget faces a $640 million deficit for 2009 and at least $4 billion for the biennial budget covering 2010 and 2011.

 <title>Strickland: Auto bailout or depression</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/justinmiller/strickland-auto-bailout-or-depression</link>
 <description>Gov. Ted Strickland said if the U.S. auto industry fails the country will slip into a depression.
Appearing on MSNBC&amp;#39;s &amp;quot;Morning Joe&amp;quot; on Thursday, Strickland debated giving loans to General Motors and Chrysler with Gov. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.). Strickland said the failure of the Detroit Three would collapse auto suppliers as well.

 <title>Boehner argues for House Republican alternative auto industry legislation</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/daviddewitt/boehner-argues-house-republican-alternative-auto-industry-legislation</link>
 <description>Minority Leader U.S. Rep. John Boehner (R-West Chester) wrote in support of the American Automotive Reorganization and Recovery Plan that House Republicans introduced as its preferred legislation to assist the U.S. auto industry in his eBulletin Wednesday.
Boehner said that Washington should address the challenges facing the auto industry, but should not do it through what he called &amp;quot;taxpayer-funded bailouts that prolong workers&amp;#39; pain and put your tax dollars at risk.&amp;quot; Boehner instead called for &amp;quot;fixing problems and removing barriers that make it harder for families to prosper.&amp;quot;
Boehner said that the House Republicans&amp;#39; American Automotive Reorganization and Recovery Plan &amp;quot;will protect taxpayers and help working families by allowing the auto companies to become competitive again without nationalizing an industry that needs real reform or forcing taxpayers to pay for a bailout.&amp;quot;

 <title>Strickland says he’d veto veterans’ bonus as legislation stands</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/daviddewitt/strickland-says-he-d-veto-veterans-bonus-legislation-stands</link>
 <description>Ohio Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland said in a statement that he would veto legislation in its current form that would pay Ohio veterans a bonus using rainy-day funds.
&amp;quot;I strongly support honoring Ohio veterans with a bonus paid for by selling bonds, just as our state has done in the past and just as the Ohio Senate has voted to do,&amp;quot; Strickland said. &amp;quot;However, considering the historic budget challenges before us, I do not believe it is fiscally responsible to pay for this worthy priority with rainy-day funds that are designed to be used for budget emergencies.  Therefore, if the bill remains in its current form I would veto it.&amp;quot;

 <title>Voinovich satisfied with finalized auto industry aid bill</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/daviddewitt/voinovich-satisfied-finalized-auto-industry-aid-bill</link>
 <description>U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich (R-Cleveland) released a statement Wednesday upon word that the Senate has finalized a bill to bring bridge loans to the American auto industry.
&amp;quot;My understanding is that we&amp;#39;re one step closer to giving a lifeline to millions of hard-working Americans who are worried about their jobs and providing for their families,&amp;quot; Voinovich said. &amp;quot;While I am still studying the legislation, it appears that my Senate colleagues agree with my concerns regarding crippling environmental standards as well as providing strong protections for taxpayers and have moved to address those concerns.&amp;quot;
Voinovich serves as co-chair of the Senate Auto Caucus and said that the relief is in the form of bridge loans that have to be paid back.

 <title>Looking at Stivers, Kilroy’s futures in 2010</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/justinmiller/looking-stivers-kilroy-s-futures-2010</link>
 <description>It hasn’t been a week since the race for the 15th Congressional District ended, but a competitive rematch could be in the making.U.S. Representative-elect Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Columbus) defeated Steve Stivers (R-Columbus) by 2,311 votes, as tabulated last Sunday. This narrow victory for Kilroy comes after a narrow loss of about 1,000 votes to U.S. Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus) in 2006. These twin close elections may indicate a tight 2010 race, especially if Stivers runs again.
Stivers’ narrow loss to Kilroy hasn’t taken the shine off him for Republicans or Democrats.
Franklin County Republican Party Chairman Doug Preisse said he talked to Stivers the day after his defeat and said he has an “unlimited” future.
“It’s a little early to be talking about specifics, but generally speaking I can say this is a guy with a great future, whether it’s in public service or back in business. His military career, serving his country, continues,” Preisse said. “He had the opportunity to introduce himself to a wider audience, indeed a national audience too.

 <title>Elections bill passes, but Dems say too soon</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/justinmiller/elections-bill-passes-dems-say-too-soon</link>
 <description>COLUMBUS – Democrats spoke out against the passage of a bill to end same-day voting and registration, saying it’s being rushed through the lame-duck session without giving enough time to fully debate a measure that impacts peoples’ voting rights.
 Senate Bill 380 passed the state Senate on Tuesday by a vote of 19 to 11. However, three Senate Democrats took the floor before its passage to speak out against how fast the bill was being pushed toward a vote by the Republican leadership.

 <title>Brown says aid to auto industry is investment in middle class</title>
 <link>http://www.politickeroh.com/daviddewitt/brown-says-aid-auto-industry-investment-middle-class</link>
 <description>As Congress continued to discuss providing bridge loans to the auto industry, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain) released a statement Tuesday conveying his support for the measures.
 &amp;quot;Aid for the auto industry is an investment in our nation&amp;#39;s middle class and I&amp;#39;m glad the White House is now at the table,&amp;quot; Brown said. &amp;quot;Millions of American jobs are at stake. The auto industry has agreed to strict oversight measures and has provided plans on how they&amp;#39;ll use taxpayer funds.&amp;quot;     Brown said it was time to pass a bill that &amp;quot;invests in our nation&amp;#39;s workers and manufacturing base.&amp;quot;     &amp;quot;Every day of inaction increases the risks to Ohio jobs,&amp;quot; Brown said.
