Boccieri issues statement on Trevena hire

Congressman-Elect John Boccieri (D-Alliance) released a statement following the news that he has hired Ohio Department of Natural Resources deputy director Anthony Trevena as his chief of staff in the U.S. Congress.

"I am pleased Anthony has agreed to serve as my chief of staff in the 111th Congress," Boccieri said. "This is a critical position, and I am confident Anthony's background and experience make him a perfect fit as chief of staff for the people of the 16th Congressional District."

Trevena has a Bachelor's degree in education and master's degree in business administration. He previously served on Gov. Ted Strickland's Congressional staff. Trevena will officially join Boccieri's staff in early January.

Boccieri hires Trevena as chief of staff

Congressman-elect John Boccieri (D-Alliance) has hired Anthony Trevena as his chief of staff for when he heads to Washington, D.C. to represent Ohio's 16th Congressional District.

Trevena has worked for Gov. Ted Strickland in various capacities over the years and is from Guilford Lake in Columbiana County.

Trevena took a leave of absence from his position as deputy director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in order to work for the Boccieri campaign.

State Sen. Boccieri defeated fellow state Sen. Kirk Schuring (R-Jackson Twp.) in the race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre) in Ohio's 16th. Boccieri got 55.26 percent of the vote in the race compared to 44.74 for Schuring.

Gerberry drops out of contention to replace Boccieri

State Rep. Ronald Gerberry (D-Youngstown) has withdrawn his name from those contending to replace Congressman-elect John Boccieri (D-Alliance) in Ohio's 33rd state Senate district.

Gerberry had expressed an early interest in the position, but told the Youngstown Vindicator that he was withdrawing from contention because he believes he can best serve his district in the Ohio House.

Gerberry is a senior member of Ohio's House, having served for about 20 years. The Democrats recently gained control of the House, but made no gains in the state Senate. Gerberry said he anticipates being appointed chair of a House committee, but isn't sure which ones interest him as of yet.

    Various officials lining up to replace Boccieri in Ohio Senate

    State Sen. John Boccieri (D-Alliance) has won his race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre) in Ohio's 16th Congressional District.

    With Boccieri heading to Congress, a vacancy will be left in Ohio's 33rd state Senate seat.

    Several candidates have already thrown their hat in the ring to replace Boccieri, notifying the Ohio Senate Democratic caucus of their interest.

    These candidates so far include state Rep. Ronald Gerberry (D-Youngstown) and at-large Councilman in the city of Alliance Steve Okey (D).

    Boardman Trustee Robyn Gallitto (D) also said she expressed her interest to several members of the caucus.

    Mahoning County Commissioners John McNally IV and Anthony Traficanti have previously expressed their interest in the position, but were unavailable for comment Thursday afternoon.

    Schuring camp proud of campaign effort

    The campaign of state Sen. Kirk Schuring (R-Jackson Twp.) is proud of their effort in the race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre) in Ohio's 16th Congressional District.

    Schuring came up short in his race against state Sen. John Boccieri (D-Alliance). The Ohio Secretary of State currently shows Boccieri received 55.26 percent of the vote to Schuring's 44.74 percent. Boccieri received 160,894 votes compared to 130,270 for Schuring.

    Schuring campaign manager PJ Wenzel said he was proud of the campaign, and thankful to all of the volunteers who helped with the effort.

    "I thought it was a great effort," Wenzel said. "We had a tremendous team of volunteers, staff and supporters. We worked very hard to the end. We had hundreds and hundreds of volunteers throughout the community, working to get a favorable outcome."

    Boccieri looks forward to putting middle-class families first in Congress

    State Sen. John Boccieri (D-Alliance) made his campaign in Ohio's 16th Congressional District about putting middle-class families first, and the Congressman-elect is looking forward to doing that in the next session of Congress.

    Boccieri beat state Sen. Kirk Schuring (R-Jackson Twp.) in the race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre). Boccieri will become the first Democrat to represent Ohio's 16th in 58 years.

    The Ohio Secretary of State currently shows Boccieri received 55.26 percent of the vote to Schuring's 44.74 percent. Boccieri received 160,894 votes compared to 130,270 for Schuring.

    Boccieri spokesperson Bryan Collinsworth said that Boccieri campaigned on putting middle-class families first and bringing the change necessary to Washington in order to do that.

    Canton Repository: Schuring concedes 16th

    The Canton Repository is reporting that state Sen. Kirk Schuring has conceded the race for Ohio's 16th Congressional District to opponent state Sen. John Boccieri (D-Alliance).

    The two were vying to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre), and the victory will make Boccieri the first Democrat to represent Ohio's 16th in 58 years. Regula has held the seat since 1973.

    Schuring had offered his congratulations to Boccieri.

    "I pledged to work with him. To try to help him with his agenda," Schuring told the Repository.

    CNN: Boccieri to replace retiring Regula

    CNN has projected state Sen. John Boccieri (D-Alliance) as the winner in the race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre) in Ohio's 16th Congressional District.

    Boccieri was squaring off with state Sen. Kirk Schuring (R-Jackson Twp.) for the seat.

    Results for the Ohio Secreatary of State as of the time of this report showed Boccieri getting 54.20 percent support in the race compared to 45.80 percent support for Schuring.

    The correlating numbers show Boccieri with 104,517 votes compared to 88,317 for Schuring.

    CNN called the race 54 percent Boccieri to 46 percent Schuring with 90 percent of precincts reporting.

    Candidates on Election night

    The candidates vying for Ohio's Congressional seats have released their public schedules for Election Day and night, and most candidates will be holed up for watch parties in various hotels, restaurants and ballrooms throughout the state.

    In Ohio's 1st Congressional District, state Rep. Steve Driehaus (D-Price Hill) is challenging U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Westwood).

    Chabot planned to cast his ballot Tuesday morning at the Westwood Library. On election night he will be hosting a party at the downtown Hyatt.

    Driehaus will be crisscrossing the district. His campaign planned on greeting voters as the polls open at Bond Hill Community, Zion Baptist Fellowship Hall and St. Teresa of Avila Church, before lunching at Price Hill Chili. Driehaus planned to continue visiting polling locations before joining supporters later in the evening at Sully's Restaurant Saloon.
